Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic extension is the sole TLD meant for personal web pages only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are popular by. At first, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to order john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired third-level domain names remained functional.
